Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage and what is it beneficial for?

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a modality that is effective for one of three reasons. It’s effective:

a) for relieving swelling in the body subsequent to medical treatment or surgery;

b) for relieving swelling that occurs from illness blocking the lymphatic system, such as lymphedema;

c) for detox purposes, helping to remove waste and toxins in the body (a practice that many people find helpful for immune support around the change of seasons).

Can any Massage Therapist give a Lymphatic Massage?

No, in North Carolina, it’s required to have a Certified Lymphatic Drainage Specialist perform the service. At Good Karma, our experienced practitioners use the Vodder Technique which is an advanced bodywork modality that consists of super-light, gentle motions that move lymph fluid effectively and safely, with minimal discomfort or pain.

What is the experience level of the therapist?

Our therapists have been practicing since 2012 and skilled at performing a variety of modalities from Swedish and Deep Tissue to Pregnancy, and Sports massage and just about every modality in between.

Can I see a chiropractor and get a massage immediately after?

It really depends on what you prefer. Some people feel that having a chiropractic adjustment is easier after having tight muscles massaged, in order to minimize the tension and stiffness. But still others feel the adjustment before the massage works better for them. Neither is incorrect.

Must I be completely undressed?

You should undress to the level you are comfortable. For a full body massage where you’d like the Therapist to focus on your back muscles, ladies may feel free not to remove the brassiere until the therapist moves to that area. Therapists are VERY professional and will use proper draping techniques to ensure privacy and comfort during the massage.

What should I do if the pressure is too much or not enough?

The therapist will typically check in with you during the session (unless you’re asleep, in which case we will assume the pressure is working for you!). Please feel free to communicate to the therapist at any time if you’re uncomfortable with the level of pressure being applied. Your utmost satisfaction is important. For an effective massage, it’s important that you receive enough pressure to feel as though your muscles are being worked, but not to the point of pain.

How often should I get a massage?

Everyone is different, however there is a rule of thumb that we follow for our clients. Typically, if you’re presenting with an issue involving pain or tension that has been chronic, it’s usually effective to start with a schedule of approximately every 1-2 weeks until the issue is resolved. At that time, you would be fine to be placed on a maintenance schedule, which consists of approximately once per month.

NOTE: Therapist Right of Refusal

Under NC regulation, a Licensed Massage Therapist has the right to provide therapeutic services to whom they choose and shall also have the right to refuse treatment, or to terminate a treatment in progress to protect their own safety and well-being, including situations where the client is abusive, under the influence of alcohol/drugs, or otherwise impaired or a client who has violated the boundaries of the professional relationship by initiating or asking the Therapist to engage in sexual activity.

Requests for sexual activity will NOT be tolerated, will be viewed as solicitation and reported to the proper authorities. The client will not be rescheduled if this occurs.
